How to change the message waiting lamp indicator for the Cisco 7940 IP phone

Document number: 81018

Modifying the message waiting lamp behavior affects the red LED on the Cisco 7940 IP phone's handset. The message waiting indicator on the display will continue to appear depending on the option selected.

To change the message waiting lamp indicator:

  1. Log on to the Cisco CallManager at http://callmanager/ccmuser.
For additional information, see Eureka! document 81014 — How to log on to the Cisco CallManager for the Cisco 7940 IP phone.

  2. Click the Change the Message Waiting Lamp policy for your phone link.

  3. Click the down arrow below "Message Waiting Lamp Policy" to select the preferred option. The down arrow should be clicked in the same row as the phone line that should be modified.
Note: Line 1 is the primary number for the phone. All incoming calls will route to line 1 first and will only route to Line 2 if Line 1 is currently busy.

    • Use System Policy (default): PeopleSoft's system policy is that the message waiting LED lamp will light if there is a message waiting in voice mail for the line selected. The message "You HaveVoice Mail" and the envelope icon will appear on the phone's display.
    • Always light: The LED lamp will light if there is a message waiting in voice mail for the line selected. The message "You HaveVoice Mail" and the envelope icon will appear on the phone's display.
    • Never light: The LED lamp will not light even if there are messages waiting in voice mail for the line selected. The message "[#] New Missed Calls" and the envelope icon will appear on the phone's display. Once the handset is picked up and hung up, the message "You HaveVoice Mail" will appear.

  4. Click the Update button.

The page will refresh and the following Status message will appear: Update completed successfully; 1 (or 2 if both selected) Message Waiting Lamp setting(s) updated.
