Document number: 75098

To order computer cords, network cords, or dongles, if you are an employee who is based in the United States, see the Eureka! document on accessing the Peripherals Ordering website to order these items. (The website is not yet available for use by employees based outside the U.S.)

If you are not based in the U.S., submit a NorthStar ticket, (see Eureka! document 70001 — How to create a ticket in NorthStar) or contact Technical Support Operations . Start with Technical Support Operations if your need is urgent. Be sure to leave a telephone number where you may be contacted. You will be contacted when the item is ready. Your department will be charged for the item.

The standard length you may order is 7 feet. If you need a longer one because you cannot reach the port in your office, click here for more information. If you need a longer one for other reasons, please consult with your manager to see if you may expense it. For more information about ordering nonstandard equipment, see Eureka! document 79001 — How to order nonstandard computer hardware and peripherals.

If you just need to borrow an item, see Eureka! document 79003 — How to borrow computer cords and peripherals using NorthStar web.

Requesting a longer network cord

Generally, your office is configured such that the network cord for computer should be able to easily reach the network port. If your new office is configured such that you need a longer network cord, you may request via NorthStar another network cord and a network "coupler" to be used in conjunction with the network cord you already have. Please allow some lead time for the order to be processed. Your department will be charged for the items. Alternatively, check with your manager and see if you may purchase a new cord and expense the cost.

To order the additional network cord and coupler:

  1. Launch NorthStar and log in, if necessary.

  2. On the left side of My Home Page, click on Log Service Ticket.

  3. Specify how you should be contacted and enter an email address or phone number if needed.

  4. On the Log Service Ticket screen, click next to Workstation so that the radio button is chosen. Then click Next.

  5. On the next screen, click the radio button next to Request Peripheral Equipment and click Next.

  6. For the question What type of hardware peripheral do you need? choose 7 foot LAN Cable.

  7. Fill in a reasonable Date Needed.
    • Note that the format must be mm/dd/yyyy or mm/DD/yy.

  8. In the Subject field, explain your situation ( Example: "Recently moved, and network cord is now too short to reach port. Need another cable and a coupler.")
    • Note: Be sure to specify that you need the coupler, or you will not get one.

  9. Enter any further details in the Description field.

  10. Click Next.

  11. On the next screen, specify the computer for which the cable is being requested.
    • If the computer does not appear in the list, choose Other — not in list.

  12. In the Special Requirements field, enter the location where the cable and coupler may be sent.
    • If you are in a PeopleSoft office, be sure to specify your office number. If you are in another office, specify a mailing address.
    • If you do not specify enough information, your delivery will be delayed while that information is requested from you.

  13. Click Finish.

Your LAN cable and network coupler will be delivered to the specified location and your department charged for the item.

Once you receive the cord and coupler, follow these steps:

  1. Power down your computer.

  2. Disconnect your present network cord from the wall network port (leave the other end plugged into the computer).

  3. Connect your present network cord to the coupler.

  4. Connect the new cord to the other end of the coupler.

  5. Connect the new cord to the wall network port.

Your computer should be able to reach the network successfully.
