Desktop Icons Corrupted or Stacked with Wrong Icon

Document number: 69094

If your desk top icons get stacked or overprinted by an unrelated icon, or are otherwise corrupt, changing the icon settings can often correct the problem.

To change your icon settings:

  1. Right click any empty space on the desktop.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. A "Display Properties" window will open. Select Settings.
  4. Under Visual Effects change the box Use large icons. If it is checked, uncheck it. If it is unchecked, check it.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Reboot.
  7. You can try changing the settings back. If the problem reoccurs and you want to keep roughly the same size icons try this.
  8. Right click any empty space on the desktop.
  9. Select Properties.
  10. A "Display Properties" window will open.
  11. Select Apperance.
  12. Click the down arrow next to the Item: box and scroll down to Icon.
  13. A Size box will appear. Change the size one unit up or down. For example if the Size is 32, make it 33.
  14. Click Apply.
  15. Reboot.

Changing the icon size should resolve the problem of an unrelated icon overlaying other icons.
