How to start in Safe mode

Document number: 69085

Safe mode is the Windows diagnostics mode. When you start the computer in Safe mode, only the specific components that are needed to run the operating system are loaded. Windows Safe Mode uses only basic files and drivers (mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, and default system services). Safe mode helps you diagnose problems. If a symptom does not reappear when you start in Safe Mode, you can eliminate the default settings and minimum device drivers as possible causes. If a newly added device or a changed driver is causing problems, you can use safe mode to remove the device or reverse the change. There are circumstances where Safe Mode will not be able to help you, such as when Windows system files required to start the system are corrupted or damaged.

Because Safe mode loads a standard video driver at a low resolution; therefore, your programs and the Windows desktop may look different than usual, In addition, the desktop icons may have moved to different locations on the desktop. You will need to contact Technical Support Operations for your local Administrator password.
