How to use character map to insert special characters
In most cases when you wish to use special characters such as £ n © ö the function will be provided in the program you are using. If you can't find the method in your program you can copy and paste the characters using "Character Map" . Note that this does not put the characters on your keyboard. It does not permit you to "type" special characters, only to cut and paste them. If you need the characters on your keyboard because you are typing in another language you can install a new keyboard layout with that other language. To use character map click on the link for your operating system:

Using "Character map" in Windows 2000.
Click on the Start button, then select Programs
Select Accessories, then System Tools, and then click Character Map.
Scroll through the Fonts and S ubsets to find the character you want.
You can then copy and paste the characters you need from Character Map into your document.
