How to check disk for bad sectors and other errors.

Document number: 69029

Some errors can be caused by damage to the disk or by errors in the way folders and files have been stored and referenced. An error checking utility can look for and sometimes correct these errors. After checking the disk for errors optimizing disk performance by defragmenting is recommended. For more information on optimizing the hard disk performance please see the document 10031 — How to defragment your drive.

WINDOWS 2000 or NT 4.0

  1. Close other running programs. You should also suspend any screen saver so that its operation will not interfere with the ScanDisk process.

  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon to open it.

  3. Click once on your " C:" drive to select it, then right click on the " C:" drive icon.

  4. Select P roperties, and then select the Tools tab.

  5. Under " Error-Checking" click on the Check Now . . . button.

  6. A "Check Disk" window will open. There should be a check mark in the box next to Automatically fix filesystem errors and also in the box next to Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.   If the boxes are not checked then check them by clicking in the box.

  7. Click on Start.

    • You will probably (but not always) get a window with the following message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you wish to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart they system?"

    • If you get that message select Yes.

    • If you want to check any other drives follow the same steps 2-7, above.

    • When you are ready to run the test shut down and restart your machine.

  8. The test may take a few minutes.

ScanDisk will locate, identify and correct some kinds of errors it finds on the disk.
