How to create a new shortcut on the desktop.

Document number: 69021

A shortcut is a quick way of opening items you use regularly.  A shortcut on the desktop appears as an icon with a small arrow in the lower left hand corner.  That arrow helps distinguish a shortcut from the actual program or file.

To create a shortcut on the desktop:

  1. Right click any empty area of the desktop

  2. Choose Ne w, then Shortcut. A New Shortcut icon will appear on the desktop.

  3. A Create Shortcut window will open.

  4. Click B rowse and navigate to find the file you want. This file could be a document, an image, an application or any other kind of file.

  5. Click once on the file to hightlight it, then click on Open. The program you have chosen will appear in the box under Command line:.

  6. Click Next. Under Select a name for the shortcut you can create a name for the shortcut, or keep the default. (My preference is to shorten the name so that, for example, "Explorer.exe" becomes "Explorer."

  7. If you want more of a reminder about what the shortcut is for than the name you can include mouseover text. For more information see document 69020 — How to create, modify and move shortcuts.

  8. Click Finish.

The new shortcut will now appear on your desktop. For more information on shortcuts see the document 69020 — How to create, modify and move shortcuts.
