ERROR: There is no dialtone...
If you receive the error message: There is no dialtone. Make sure your modem is connected to the phone line properly or Error 680: There is no dialtone. while trying to RAS in, confirm that you have a properly connected modem before proceeding with further troubleshooting.
Confirm each of the following:
There is a special port for the phone line built into your machine; do not use your network cable to RAS in.
Check that the connectors on the phone line are also in good condition.
You cannot plug your machine into a phone - it must be directly connected to the wall jack.
Do you have voicemail on this phone line? If so, the "stutter tone" or beeping sound you get on your phone line when you have voicemail may be preventing the computer from obtaining the proper dial tone. Clear all your messages from the voicemail so that the tone no longer "stutters".
If you don't have a modem tester, open a NorthStar ticket; see Eureka! document 75081 — How to get a modem tester.
For further trouble-shooting steps, see Eureka! document 39032 — How to troubleshoot modem problems.
