The IBM Thinkpad T40 and T41 have both the touch pad and the TouchPoint enabled by default. Some people prefer to disable the touch pad. 

Here is how you change the settings in the BIOS:

1. Shutdown and power-off the machine.

2. Locate the blue Access IBM button so you can press it quickly.

3. Turn on the machine.

4. As the machine begins to boot, press the blue Access IBM button as soon as you see the "IBM ThinkPad" screen.

5. A menu will open.

6. On the left panel select Utilities.

7. On the right panel double-click Start Setup Utilities.

8. With Config highlighted press { Enter}.

9. Arrow down to Keyboard/Mouse and press { Enter}.

10. Arrow down to Touch Pad and press { Enter}.

11. Arrow up or down to change to the desired setting and press { Enter}.

12. Press { F10} to save and exit.

13. Select Yes to save.

 

The touch pad and the two buttons on the lower edge will be affected by the change.  If you disable the touch pad the lower two buttons will also be disabled. The top three buttons will be unaffected by your changes.
