Troubleshooting Palm problems

Document number: 39064

These are general troubleshooting steps.  Your first step should be to review the list of Palm documents to see if a more specific solution for your problem already exists.

  1. Make sure you have adequate battery power.  It never hurts to replace the batteries on a Palm with disposable batteries. 39050 — How to install batteries in the Palm.   If you are using a Palm with rechargeable batteries try recharging for 20 minutes or so.

  2. If you are having problems with synchronizing try the following:

    • Make sure you have HotSync manager loaded. Look for the HotSync icon in the system tray.

      • Click on your Start button, then select Programs, then Palm Desktop.

      • Click on Hotsync Manager and wait 30 seconds.

      • The HotSync icon should appear in the system tray.

    • Make sure the correct "local" option is checked in the HotSync manager.

      • Click on the HotSync icon in the system tray.

      • If you have only one "Local" option and there is no check mark next to Local click on Local

      • If you have more than one "Local" option then one, and only one, of those options should be checked.

    • Make sure you have the correct Com port selected.

      • Click on the HotSync icon in the system tray.

      • Select Setup....

      • Click on the Local tab. The Com port is usually Com 1. Click in the box if you need to change it. Note: if that does not correct the problem keep in mind that you changed the setting as you should change it back before continuing troubleshooting. In most cases the modem will be using Com 2.   If the modem is using Com 2 you cannot use that port for the Palm.

    • Occasionally you will find that the connection will begin and immediately fail if the speed is set to As Fast As Possible. If you notice that Hotsync starts and immediately fails then adjust the com port speed to 9600.

    • Shut down your computer, disconnect the Palm cradle, then reconnect it making sure it is firmly seated.

    • Check the settings on the device.

      • Turn on your handheld and tap the Applications icon.

      • Tap the HotSync icon.

      • Tap "Local" above the HotSync icon and select "Direct

      • Serial" form the pick list below the HotSync icon.

      • Tap the HotSync icon to perform a HotSync operation.

    •  Make sure you are using IntelliSync as your synchronizing software.  EasySync and other synchronizing software is not supported. If you are not using IntelliSync see 39049 — How to install IntelliSync for the Palm organizer.

    •  Make sure IntelliSync is properly configured, including your Lotus Notes password.  Before you review your configuration settings think about whether you have set things up according to the default instructions (synchronize with Lotus Notes To-do, Datebook (Calendar), Mail, and Address book, but not Journal (Notepad) or Expense.  If you have made any different choices you will have to account for that in reviewing the instructions.  See document 39065 — How to configure IntelliSync for the Palm organizer.

    • Uninstall then reinstall the Palm Software and IntelliSync. For help on uninstalling see document 69004 — How to uninstall and install software. Once you have uninstalled the Palm and IntelliSync software reinstall it through the software library.  See document  39049 — How to install IntelliSync for the Palm organizer.

  3. Check that the Com port is properly enabled or if there is a conflict for port resources. See document 29023 — Port error installing Palm software.

  4. Check whether you have adequate memory remaining on your Palm device.

  5. Try a soft reset. See document 39046 — How to reset your Palm.

  6. If a particular application is the source of the problem try uninstalling it , synchronize then  reinstalling the application. 39054 — How to install and uninstall Palm applications.

  7. For other possible problems see the document 39052 — Common Palm problems.
