Battery not holding a charge - refresh or replace the battery

Batteries have improved in recent years but they still have problems if they are not used with care. The most frequent cause for battery failure is overcharging, and failure to regularly discharge the battery. For tips on increasing battery life and charging problems see the document 39011 — How to Increase Battery Life on the Toshiba Tecra.

If you have taken the suggested steps, including cleaning the battery contacts, but your battery lasts less than 15 minutes it may be defective and need to be replaced. To arrange for replacement of the battery:

If you are an employee who is based in the United States, see the Eureka! document on accessing the Peripherals Ordering website. (The website is not yet available for use by employees based outside the U.S.)
If you are not based in the United States, open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. Your non-functional battery should not be placed in the trash. In Denver submit a North Star ticket and desktop support will come by and pick it up or send the battery to Receiving in Building One. Other locations should ensure the battery is delivered to their local recycling center. If you don't know where your local recycling facility is, contact the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation at 1-800-8-BATTERY (1-800-822-8837). They will provide you with the address of the recycling center nearest to you.

To get additional or replacement batteries, other than to replace a defective battery, you must fill out a purchase requisition.
