Can't boot, hard drive making strange sounds - repair machine
If your hard drive makes grinding, thumping or knocking sounds it may have become defective and need to be replaced. It is normal for many machine types to make clicking sounds from time to time for short periods.
Sometimes checking the drive for errors, or defragmenting the drive will resolve problems of excessive disk noise. For instructions on performing this procedure please see Eureka! document 69029 — How to check your hard disk for bad sectors and other errors and Eureka! document 10031 — How to defragment your drive.
If you are having problems booting up try resetting the machine. For more information on resetting the machine please see Eureka! document 39013 — How to reset your computer. If you succeed in booting up the machine be sure to backup all your data immediately as a noisy hard disk together with booting problems can mean the hard drive is about to fail entirely.
If the above steps did not correct the problem open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. For more information on creating the NorthStar ticket, see Eureka! document 39068 — How to submit a computer or peripheral for repair.
Note, however, that just excessive disk noise is not repairable. If you believe you are getting excessive disk noise, be sure to keep your files backed up as the machine will not be serviced until it has a problem that interferes with your work.
