Since the distribution of this machine is limited, extra parts specific to the machine must be ordered via a Purchase Requisition. See Eureka! document 17202 — How to Enter a New Requisition Using eProcurement for information on opening a Purchase Requisition. Once the Purchase Requisition is complete, it must be approved. Once approved, the part should be ordered from our vendor, or you will be contacted for more information.

The machine has the "Portege" name showing at the upper right-hand corner of the keyboard when you open the lid. To make sure you have a Portege 2000, you can turn the machine over and look on the bottom. There is a 2"x2" sticker on the bottom of the machine identifying it as a Portege 2000.

General usage tips for the Portege 2000

• On the Portege 2000, all of the ports on the back of the machine are hidden by one of 2 hinged covers. The modem port is protected by its own cover.

• The network port and the modem ports are right next to each other on this machine! Take care in plugging in your phone cord to the correct port, as the cord will fit into both ports. The network cord will not fit into the modem port, so please do not force it.
  • The network port is the larger one. It's labeled "Ether".

  • When you look inside the port, the network port has 8 small wires in it. The modem port has only 2 small wires in it. It's labeled with a very small picture of a phone handset.

• There is no "Accupoint" mouse on this machine (the eraser head mouse). It has a glide pad and left and right click buttons.

• We have found that the lid is somewhat difficult to open. Here are some suggestions to help you open it more efficiently:
  • Two-hand method: With the machine flat on a surface, straddle the front left corner of the lid with your left thumb and index finger. Use one finger or your right hand to push in the lid latch. Lift the lid with your left hand.

  • One-hand method: With the machine flat on a surface, place your tip of your right thumb, nail down, on the lid latch. Push the lid latch in. Once the lid releases, slide your right thumb up and lift the lid up using your thumb.

• For external devices (keyboards, floppy drives, mouse, Palm device, and printers) there are only USB ports available. For more information about ports, click here.

Additional equipment issued with the Portege 2000

The Portege 2000 was issued with following included in the "Executive Bundle:"

• Auto/Airplane power adaptor

• External DVD drive ( click here for more information on the DVD)

• Toshiba Slim Port Replicator - may only be used with Portege 2000 machines
  • The replicator has its own power port, LAN (network) port, and video (external monitor) port. It also has its own 4 USB ports (2 on the back, and 1 on each of the angled parts of the replicator, underneath the machine when the machine is docked.
    • The ports are located on the back of the replicator. In order from left to right: lock hole, LAN port, video port, 2 USB ports, DC power in port.
  • Connection for battery charger cradle for external battery: When the machine is docked, connect the battery charger cradle to the docking station to recharge the external battery while the machine is in the docking station and the docking station is plugged in. The port for the cradle is to the left of the power button on the replicator, and is covered by a door.
  • Connecting the machine to the replicator:
    1. Make sure the replicator is plugged in to a power source in the wall.
    2. Place the replicator on a flat surface so that you can read the "TOSHIBA" name printed on it.
    3. Make sure that the lock at the upper right-hand corner is UNlocked.
    4. To line up the machine to fit onto the replicator, try centering the power button at the upper left-hand corner of the replicator with the upper left hinge on the machine. Then gently press the machine down. When the machine is successfully docked, the power lights on the machine will come on if the docking station is plugged in.
    5. To ensure extra security, make sure the sliding lock switch at the upper right-hand corner of the replicator is all the way to the left once the machine is docked.
  • You can turn on the machine by pressing on the round power button at the upper left-hand corner of the replicator. This method is advisable if you are using an external monitor. If you are not using an external monitor, you can also turn it on by opening the lid and pressing the power button as usual.
  • The internal battery charges while the machine is plugged into the docking station, if the docking station is also plugged in. The external battery may be charged while the machine is docked as well - click here for more information.

  • To remove the machine from the docking station, press the button on top of the lock at the upper right-hand corner. Then slide the lock to the right.

• Extra external battery
  • If you wish to dock the machine to the Port Replicator, you cannot have the external battery attached to the machine.
  • External battery recharges if connected to the machine while the machine is plugged in.
  • External battery may also be recharged if placed in the external charger cradle and plugged into the docking station while the docking station is plugged in.
  • The bottom of the external battery has pictorial instructions on how to attach the battery. Some tips and a diagram below:
    1. Turn off the machine and remove it from the docking station. You may want to unplug the machine as well.
    2. Turn the machine over so it rests on its lid and place on a secure flat surface, with the lid latch closest to you.
    3. Turn the external battery so that the name "TOSHIBA" reads upside down from your viewpoint.
    4. Note that there are 2 small "antenna"-like latches at the the now upper right-hand and left-hand corners of the battery.
    • They look like little cannons pointing at each other from opposite sides of the battery and are right above the feet for the battery.
    5. Rotate the latches so that they stick up 90 degrees from the battery, pointing away from you.
    • This rotates 2 small latches on the bottom of the battery 90 degrees as well.
    6. Note the 1" slot near the top of the computer ("Expansion port" in the diagram below).
    7. Note the 2 holes at the upper right-hand and left-hand corners of the machine ("Battery latch hole"s in the diagram below).
    8. Place the "cannon latches" in its corresponding "Battery latch hole".

    9. Press down so that the battery's connector fits into the "Expansion port".

• Battery charger cradle for extra external battery
  • The external battery may be recharged if placed in this charger cradle and the cradle is connected to the docking station while the docking station is plugged in.
  • To place the external battery into the charger cradle and start the charging process:
    1. Place the charger cradle on a flat surface. You should be able to read the "TOSHIBA" name on it.
    2. There is a skinny port (about 1" long) on the cradle below the "TOSHIBA".
    3. Take the external battery and hold it so you can read the "TOSHIBA" name on it.
    4. There is a connector on the bottom of the battery, about 1" long.
    5. There is a small hook-like thing on the bottom of battery, above the "B" in "TOSHIBA".
    6. There is a corresponding hole on the charger cradle for that hook. Put the hook into the cradle first, then push down so that the connector on the bottom of the battery is firmly pressed into the cradle's 1" port.
    7. Connect the charger cradle to the docking station by plugging it into the port on the left side of the replicator. The port is covered by a door.

Ports on a Portege 2000

• Video: The video port is on the computer itself, and is protected by the long hinged cover.

• External device ports: PS/2, serial, parallel ports:
  • The Portege 2000 does not have a PS/2, a serial, or a parallel port. All external device ports must be USB, including printers.
  • If you request an external mouse or keyboard via NorthStar, be sure to specify that you can only use USB devices as you do not have a PS/2 port on this machine.
    • Other external device requests must go through the Purchase Requisition process. See Eureka! document 17202 — How to Enter a New Requisition Using eProcurement for information on Purchase Requisitions.

Power button and powering the Portege 2000

To access the power button on your Portege 2000, you must open the lid of the machine so that you can see the keyboard. Look for a flat oval-shaped silver button above the { F4} key. It should not take much pressure to turn it on. If you press the button and the machine does not appear to turn on ( i.e., the On light - second from the left of indicator lights on the front of your machine - does not turn green), try again.

Note that you must have both the transformer (the small brick-like thing) and the cord that goes into the wall OR a docking station with the proper power attachments plugged in to use electricity to run the machine . Without one or the other, you cannot use power from the wall. The cord from the transformer fits into a port on the back of the machine, towards the left side as you face the front of the machine (next to the long hinged cover).

How do I connect to the network?

A network (rounded) cord fits into the network port. On the back of the machine, there are 2 ports that look very similar. One has its own cover. They look like phone jack ports. As you look at both of them from the back of the machine, the network port is on the right. It is behind the long hinged cover. It has 8 small wires inside and is a little wider than the modem port. The network port is labeled "Ether" in very small letters on the inside of the door covering the rear ports.

The other end of the network cord should be plugged into a PeopleSoft network port (usually on the wall and labeled with an "A" or "B".) Do not use your phone cord (usually a black flat cord) to connect your machine to the network while in the office.

The floppy drive for a Portege 2000

This machine does not come with a floppy drive. You must order a floppy drive via a purchase requisition. See Eureka! document 17202 — How to Enter a New Requisition Using eProcurement for information on opening a Purchase Requisition. Once the Purchase Requisition is complete, it must be approved. The part should be ordered from our vendor, or you will be contacted for more information.

If you are provided with a floppy drive, it will be a USB floppy drive. The floppy drive connection port is located on the back of the machine. There are 2 USB ports on the machine. There are 4 USB ports on the port replicator. You may use any of the ports. You can ONLY use a USB floppy drive, so you CANNOT just use a floppy drive from another machine. You may use one from a Tecra 8200 or 9x00 series machine ONLY.

The modem for a Portege 2000

Your Portege 2000 comes with a built-in v.90/56K modem.

The Portege 2000 does not need a modem tester because it has built-in protection from digital lines. You should try to find out if the building you are calling from has digital or analog phone lines before using your modem, since you cannot dial in via a digital line.

The modem jack is located on the rear of your machine, right next to the network port. The 2 ports look very similar, but the modem port is actually a little smaller than the network port. As you look at the machine, the modem port is the one on the left. It is protected by its own little hinged door. When you look inside the modem port, you can see 2 small wires inside it. Please be careful not to mix the 2 ports up - put the correct cord into the correct port.

To use the modem, use a phone cord to connect the modem to the wall phone jack. (Do NOT use the network cord. A phone cord is flat, a network cord is rounded.)

Reset button on a Portege 2000

There is no reset button on the Portege 2000. To reset the machine, hold the power button down for 3-5 seconds to shut down the machine. Wait 30 seconds, then turn on the machine again.

The mouse on the Portege 2000

Internal mouse: In lieu of an internal mouse (the Accupoint or "eraser head"), the Portege 2000 is equipped with a "touch pad" in the middle of the wrist rest on the Portege 2000. Use your finger to move the cursor on the screen and use the buttons as you would mouse buttons.

• There are 2 buttons below the touch pad that act like the right and left mouse buttons.

• You may also tap the touch pad and that action will act in the same manner as the left mouse button.

External mouse: You may use only a USB external mouse with this machine. See the ports section for more information about external devices.

DVD ROM drive on the Portege 2000

There is no CD-ROM or DVD-ROM attached directly to or in the Portege 2000 computer. You must use an external CD-ROM or DVD-ROM unit. You were issued a PCMCIA DVD-ROM with your machine. The PCMCIA slot is on the right side of the machine.

Volume control

The speaker on a Portege 2000 is the small round hole (about 1/2" round) on the bottom of the machine.

There is no physical volume control on the machine. To change the volume of the sound coming through the bottom speaker or your headphones, you must use the "sound volume hot keys". The machine must be powered on and booted up.

• Once Windows has loaded, you can press the { Fn} key and
  • The { 1} key to make the volume softer

  • The { 2} key to make the volume louder

• To mute the speakers, press the { Fn} key and the { Esc} key.

Any of these key combinations will cause a graphic on your machine to appear to represent the feature you are accessing.

Features on rear of Portege 2000

On the Portege 2000, most of the ports on the back of the machine are hidden by a hinged cover. There are 2 hinged covers - one small and one long. Open the covers to expose the ports. As you look at back of the machine while it lies flat on a table, here are the ports, from left to right:

1. Modem port: Plug in a phone cord here to dial (RAS) into the network from a remote location. It is labeled with a very small picture of a phone handset. This port is protected by its own small hinged cover.

2. LAN (Network) port: Plug in one end of a network cord here; the other goes into the wall in a network port. It's labeled "Ether" in very tiny letters on the hinged door.

3. USB ports: (2 of them, right next to each other) - for USB devices.

4. Video port: Used for connecting an external monitor.

5. DC power in: Where to plug in the power cord that came with this machine when the machine is not docked.

Features on left side of Portege 2000

These ports are on the left side of the machine, as you look at it from the front while it lies flat on a table. The order is from back to front of the machine:

1. Secure Digital port : It is a flat slot, about 1" wide and 3/16" high. Certain devices can use this port. Its use is not supported by PeopleSoft. It is labeled with an "SD."

2. Cooling vent. (Do not block.)

Features on right side of Portege 2000

These ports are on the right side of the machine, as you look at it from the front while it lies flat on a table. The order is from the front to the back of the machine:

1. Wireless on/off switch: DO NOT turn this on at any time. The use of wireless networking at PeopleSoft is forbidden as it is very unsecure. The wireless function has been disabled.

2. Microphone jack: Plug in a computer microphone here.

3. Headphone jack: Plug in headphones here. For information about controlling the volume in the headphones, click here.

Top of Portege 2000 (with lid open)

With the lid open so that you can see the keyboard, here are some items to note:

1. The power button is above the { F4} key.

• Picture of plug: Indicates you are plugged into an external power source. When on, the light is green.
• Picture of "clock": A green light Indicates the machine is on. The light may blink yellow when the machine is in suspend mode.
• Picture of battery: Indicates status of your battery when your machine is plugged into an external power source. Yellow indicates you need to plan to recharge your battery soon.
• Picture of battery with a number "2" in it: If on, indicates that your second battery is connected to the machine. When yellow, your second battery needs charging. If green, your second batter is fully charged.
• Picture of hard drive (a drum): Indicates your hard drive is being "hit" and that data is being retrieved or written onto the hard drive
• Picture of wireless device: Indicates wireless capability is turned on. This light should NEVER be on.

The "t" button at the top right-hand corner

With the lid of the Portege 2000 open, you can see a black button with a "t" with a dot over it on it (it looks like an " i".) This it the Toshiba Console Button. It can be programmed to launch various programs. By default, it is not programmed to launch anything when you get the machine. To program it, follow these steps:

1. Click on the Start menu, then on Settings, and finally on Control Panel.

2. Look for the Toshiba Console icon and double-click on it.

3. You will see a screen with a choice of programs to program the button to launch, or you can browse and choose your own application.

4. When you are done choosing an application, click Apply, and then OK.

Your Toshiba Console button will launch the program of your choice when the machine is on, you are logged onto the machine, and the Toshiba Console button is pressed.

Toshiba product tour of the Portege 2000

1. The File Download screen appears. Click on Run this program from its current location to choose it.

Download Toshiba Product Tour

The product tour file is about about 486 KB. The link appears below the instructions. Follow these steps to download the portege_2000_tour.exe file:

1. Once you click the link, the File Download screen appears.

2. Click on Save this program to disk.

3. Click OK.

4. Navigate to a location to which you may download the file.

After the file is downloaded, the Download Complete screen appears. You can click on the Open button to launch the tour. Click on the various circles on the right side of the screen to see the different views of the machine.
