Using your new Portege 3110
Your new Portege 3110 has many features that are different from the normal laptop. Click on the feature you would like to learn about or problem you are having below:

The power button is small, silver-colored rectangular shaped button on the left side of your machine. To turn the machine on, press the button in (towards the machine - don't try to slide it). It should not take much pressure to turn it on. If you press the button and the machine does not appear to turn on (i.e., the On light does not turn on), try again.
If that doesn't work, take a look at the left side of the machine. A little closer to the front of the machine than the power button, there is a short sliding bar with tiny pictures of a padlock closed and a padlock open. If you cannot turn on your machine, your lock button is probably locked. Move the sliding bar towards you so that it is sitting under the picture of the unlocked padlock.
Your power button will be unlocked you should be able to press the power button and turn the machine on.

Along with your Portege 3110, you received a couple of cords and a rectangular "network expander bar." That bar is about 7 inches long, with the word Toshiba engraved on the top. You need the bar to use certain peripheral items such as an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor. To use the bar, you must plug it into its port on the right side of your machine. There is a door cover over the port. Open the cover - the size of the port makes it easy to spot where the bar should be plugged in. Be sure that the letters HRS on the network expander bar plug are face up.

Where do I plug in my network dongle?
The Portege 3110 does not use a network dongle as most of us know it (i.e., the flat white connector with the words 3Com on it). Instead, to connect to the network you need to use a network cable directly plugged into your machine. It is the same type of cable used to connect your desktop machine to the network.
You plug the network cord into your network expander bar on the same side you plug in your keyboard or PS/2 mouse. The port you use is labeled Ether (for "Ethernet") in very tiny letters. It looks like phone line port on the Toshiba Tecra 550s.

Where do I plug in my power cord?
Note that you must have both the transformer (the small brick-like thing) and the cord that goes into the wall. Without one or the other, you cannot use power from the wall.
Use ONLY the power transformer that comes with your machine; you cannot use the transformer that is used with the Toshiba Tecra 520 or 550.
There are 2 places you can plug in your power cord.
The network port expander bar. You plug in the power on the same side as you plug in your serial mouse and monitor.
Be sure the small picture of the arrow is showing on the top of the plug when you plug it into the machine or the network port expander bar.

The floppy drive on a Portege 3110
Your machine probably came with a floppy drive. You may not use the floppy drives used with the Toshiba Tecra 510, 520, 550, 8000, or 8100. You also may NOT use the floppy drive for the Portege 3440.
The floppy drive plugs into the machine on the right side of the machine next to the network port expander bar. Open the cover over the ports to access them.
You may attach the external floppy drive while the computer is on or off.

Your Portege 3110 comes with a built-in v.90/56K modem.
The modem jack is located on the left side of your machine, near the back (past the power button). It is covered by a small door about 1/2 inch long. The door opens from the read end of the machine. It only opens to a 45 degree angle. It does NOTopen further - do not force the door or you will break it. Since the modem is connected to the door, if the door is broken, the modem will be unusable.
To use the modem, use a phone cord as you do with other laptop computers (do NOT use the network cord) A phone cord is flat, a network cord is rounded.) The fit seems a little loose, but it should work.
Close the modem port door when the modem is not in use to prevent breakage.

CD-ROM drive for the Portege 3110
The standard Portege 3110 does not come with a CD-ROM drive. You must order one separately via NorthStar. For more information on how to order, see Eureka! document 75091 — How to request an external CD or an additional Port replicator bar for your Portege 3110. Your department will be charged for the drive, so contact your manager before making the request.
Installing the CD-ROM:
- The CD-ROM drive comes with several pieces:
- Inside your CD-ROM drive, there is a paper "CD" that is used to protect the drive during shipping. Remove that piece of paper.
- There is a setup disk included with the drive - DO NOT use this disk. All of the software you need is on your computer.
- Turn off the power to your machine.
- On the left side of the machine, there is a slot for a PCMCIA card. Currently, there is a piece of plastic being used as a placeholder. Remove the piece of plastic by sliding the button on the left front of the machine to the right. The plastic piece should pop out. You may discard the plastic.
- Included with your CD-ROM drive is a PCMCIA card. Also included is a cord. One side of the cord has a connector with the letters HRS on top. Connect that side of the cord to the PCMCIA card. The number of holes on each side of the cord should help you decide which end goes where.
- Connect the other side of the cord to the CD-ROM drive. The connection point is on the back (skinny side; not the bottom) side of the drive.

Installing the CD-ROM with NT4
Slide the PCMCIA card, face-up (the name of the card manufacturer should be plainly visible, along with a small arrow that should point toward the machine) into the PCMCIA card slot.
Turn on your Portege 3110.
Your CD-ROM drive device will probably not be recognized right away. You will need to start the device. You do not have to be on the network to start the device.
Once the machine has finished booting up, click on the Start menu. Click on Settings, then Control Panel, and then on the Devices icon.
The Devices panel appears. Look for atasmini. Click on it to highlight it. (Look carefully at the list; if you still cannot find it, click here.)
Click on the Sta rtup... button on the right-hand side of the Devices panel.
From the list that appears, choose System.
Click OK.
Click Close.
Reboot the machine (click on the Start menu, then on Sh ut Down... and then on Restart the computer?)
When the machine reboots, your CD-ROM drive should be recognized. Open Windows NT Explorer to view the drives. Your CD-ROM drive is your D: drive.

Installing the CD-ROM with Windows 2000
To install Panasonic CD ROM on Windows 2000 from the Software Library in Lotus Notes:
Open Lotus Notes, then open the Software Library by clicking the bookmark link.
You may need to look in your databases folder
for the Software library bookmark
If you don't have the Software Library bookmark see document 16250 — How to add the Software Library database link to Lotus Notes for instructions on installing the Software library bookmark.
Click the Standard Software Package Installs icon.
Click By Package Name. This view will probably already be showing as it is the default view.
Scroll until you see the entry Windows 2000 Panasonic CD ROM Install and double click on it to open it.
When prompted Slide the PCMCIA card, face-up (the name of the card manufacturer should be plainly visible, along with a small arrow that should point toward the machine) into the PCMCIA card slot.

Once you install the CD-ROM's PCMCIA card on the machine, you do not have to remove it. Just disconnect the CD-ROM cord from the card. Squeeze the sides of the plug to unlatch it and rock gently to remove.
When your CD-ROM is not connected on startup you will get the message At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details . This is normal and will not cause problems. Just click OK and continue as usual.
The power supply for your CD-ROM drive is your Portege 3110. Once you hook the drive up to your machine, it should work. While the drive is plugged in, it will also be recharged so that it can be used as standalone for short periods of time.
Do not plug in the CD-ROM while the Portege 3110 is on and use it. You should plug it in and then power up the Portege 3110.
If you want to listen to a music CD on the CD-ROM drive, be sure to plug your earphones into the CD-ROM drive. You cannot hear the CD by plugging your earphones into the Portege 3110 or through the Portege 3110 speakers.

You don't have atasmini on the Device panel
If when you click on Devices in Control Panel you do not have the atasmini device showing, you can add the software for it. This is most likely to occur if you have one of the first few Portege 3110s built at PeopleSoft, usually a 3020. To add the device software, follow these steps:
Log onto the PeopleSoft network.
In Windows NT Explorer, look for your P: drive.
Look for the build folder on your mapped P: drive. To find out what server your P: drive should be mapped to, see Eureka! document 50003 — How to map a drive letter - P: drive.
Look for the ntfiles subfolder under the build folder.
Look for the t3110 subfolder under the ntfiles subfolder.
Double-click on the kxl807a.pwc icon. You will be asked if you are sure that you want to apply the file kxl807a.pwc to your computer. Click Yes.
Once the file is applied to your computer, the message The file kxl807a.pwc has been successfully applied to your computer . Click OK.
Reboot your machine.
Try locating the CD-ROM device on your Portege 3110 again. Click here to go back to that step in the CD-ROM drive installation process.

On a Portage, the reset button is on the front of the machine. It is a small pinhole-sized button that has the word "Reset" in very tiny letters. Press a fine ballpoint pen tip in the hole to reset the machine.

Intellimouse
The Microsoft IntelliMouse says that is it "Serial and PS/2 Compatible" but it will not work consistently on the PS/2 Port
on some machines. If you have a Microsoft IntelliMouse that is not working on the PS/2 Port try connecting it to the serial port and installing it as a serial mouse. For instructions on how to installing a serial mouse, see Eureka! document
39002 — External mouse not working, add serial mouse device. When installed as a serial mouse you should be able to use it as a standard mouse, but the scroll wheel will not work.
