When you open a page in internet explorer or try to open a link to a PDF file you may get this error: This page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running controls in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly. or you may get an " Error getting Content" message.

The ActiveX controls are responsible for managing the small files that allow execution of visual basic, java and other scripts withint the browser environment. This error can occur for a number of different reasons ranging from corrupt dll files, to incorrect security settings to actual unsafe content. In the past some security settings have been modified from the default to avoid this error message. This is no longer an acceptable solution. Any changes to security settings must be authorized by the team responsible for network security. Making changes without authorization could have serious consequences. Below is a series of steps to address the problem.

1. Make sure your security settings are properly set to the defaults. For more information see Eureka! Document 19013 — How to check your security settings in IE

2. Try the ActiveX fix in the software library.

Open Lotus Notes, then open the Software Library by clicking the bookmark link.
- You may need to look in your databases folder for the Software library bookmark
- If you don't have the Software Library bookmark, see document 16250 — How to add the Software Library database link to Lotus Notes for instructions on installing the Software library bookmark.
Click the Standard Software Package Installs icon.
Click By Package Name. This view will probably already be showing as it is the default view.
Scroll until you see the entry Internet Explorer 5 Packages and double click on it to open it.
Scroll to the button labeled ActiveX fix and click on the button.

This solution re-registers some dll files that are necessary for some secure web sites and viewing pdf files. If this solution does not work your copy of the files may be the wrong version or may be corrupt. To get another copy of the file try clicking here, when the "File download" box comes up select "Save this program to disk" Navigate to c:\winnt\system32 and save the file there - replace the existing file. Then try the Software Library fix again.

If the safety level for active content is set to High, the following message is displayed when you attempt to access a Web page that may cause a security problem:
This page contains active content that is not verifiably safe to display. To protect your computer, this content will not be displayed.

If the safety level for active content is set to Medium, the following message is displayed when you attempt to access a Web page that may cause a security problem:
The object handler for the specified type could not be found. Do you wish to locate an object handler for this type?
If you click Yes, the Microsoft Component Builders Web page is displayed. You can load the appropriate ActiveX control, if it is available, from this page.

In some cases, the following message is displayed when the safety level for active content is set to Medium and you attempt to access a Web page that may cause a security problem:
A Windows application is attempting to open or install the following software component:
<address>
The component has been digitally "signed" by its publisher, but the signature does not match the component. It is possible that this component has been damaged or tampered with. Do you wish to continue?
