This can occur when your hard disk becomes too fragmented or when a critical file is inadvertantly moved outside the first 7.8 gigs of the drive.. You can resolve the problem by creating a boot disk to start the machine, replace the critical files, then defragment the hard disk. To use this fix you will need a working computer available to create a boot disk and copy over replacement files.
The error " UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP" is most often a hardware failure requiring repair. Sometimes the fix below will resolve it temporarily, but usually it is not a permanent fix.
The solution below is for Windows 2000 Workstation or Server ONLY.
First download the files to a computer that is working.
Insert an empty floppy disk into the system.
Make sure the disk is empty and formatted. To format the disk place it in the drive. Open Windows Explorer. Right click on A:. Select Format.
Right click on this link 2kntfsfx.zip select " Save Target As ..."
Navigate to your desktop and select "OK" to put the file "2kntfsfx.zip" on your desktop.
You can download the file to any location you can remember, such as C:\temp
Double-click the file on the desktop and unzip the file into your c:\temp folder..
You can extract the files to any location you can remember, except the desktop. It won't work on the desktop.
You should have a 3 files extracted from the 2kntfsfx.zip (2kntfsfx.bat, 2kntsfx.exe and readme.txt). Double-click 2kntfsfx.bat
Type "Y" to start the image download into your A:
The floppy will become your new NTFS boot disk
Second, use the floppy to boot the broken machine, then copy over the good files
Put NTFS boot disk you have just created in the A: drive of the broken machine, turn it on and and logon as usual.
Open Windows Explorer, click on the A: drive to list the files on the floppy.
Double click on the program 2kkernfx.exe. then follow the directions.
Finally, Run speed disk to defragment your drive or the problem will re-ocur.
Click on Start, then Programs, then Norton Speed Disk, and then Norton Speed Disk
Click on the Optimization Map
Click on Optimimize.
If the above steps did not correct the problem you will need open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. For more information on creating the NorthStar ticket, see Eureka! document 39068 — How to submit a computer or peripheral for repair.
