ERROR: Application Log Full

Document number: 28021

If you are getting the error " Application Log file is full" during boot-up you must clear out the applications log. Windows NT defines an event as any significant occurrence in the system or in an application that users should be aware of and perhaps notified about. The application log keeps track of events by application on the system. For example, it records a file error that occurred in a database program.

On Windows 2000 the application log can be cleared out by doing the following:

  1. Click on the Start button on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select Settings from the pop-up list.
  3. Select Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Adminitrative Tools icon to open it.
  5. Select Event Viewer.
  6. Click once on Application Log to select it.
  7. You will get a pop up box asking if you want to save the application log before clearing it. In most cases you will answer No. However, if you have been having problems and you want someone to review the System Log, you can answer Yes and you will get the normal "Save file" dialog boxes. You will need to navigate to some folder other than the default folder

This will clear the applications log. You may wish to check your settings for event logging to reduce the frequency of the error of the applications log full.

If the above steps did not correct the problem you will need open a NorthStar ticket to make an appointment for service. Be sure to include your contact number. Describe the problem in detail, especially the steps you took to try to correct the problem. You will be contacted by the appropriate party. For more information on creating the NorthStar ticket, see Eureka! document 39068 — How to submit a computer or peripheral for repair.
