ERROR: Invalid or nonexistent document

Document number: 26080

The Lotus Notes error message "Invalid or nonexistent document" indicates that a document has been deleted from the database (typically, the mail file), but that the deletion "stub" has not been removed. When a document is deleted from a Notes database, a thumbprint or stub, of the document remains in the database until the compact task is run. On occasion, the stub is not removed during the compact task thus causing the error.

To resolve the error, you need to rebuild the database index:

  1. Open the All Documents view.
Note: Performing the task from the All Documents view ensures that the index for all documents is rebuilt, not just for those documents in a specific folder or view.

  2. Press the {Ctrl}+{Shift}+ {F9}keys simultaneously.

The database refreshes and purges the deletion stub.

If the issue persists after refreshing the database, contact Technical Support Operations for further assistance.

If the error message is not "Invalid or nonexistent document" but instead it's "Invalid or nonexistent form," see Eureka! document 23008 — Errors due to missing forms or views in a Lotus Notes database for additional information.
