The error message is most often received when attempting to open a document in the mail file that contains an attachment.  It appears that when the message is in transit, a portion of the attachment becomes corrupt.

In most cases, rebuilding the database views will allow the document to open. To rebuild the views, hold the Ctrl+Shift+F9 keys down simultaneously.

If the error message is still received after rebuilding the views, contact Technical Support Operations for assistance so that the mail file can be compacted.
