when you manually scan your machine are a known problem with the Symantec software. The problem will be corrected in a later version.
A workaround is available, but may only fix the problem temporarily. The steps for a workaround include downloading a batch file to your Windows desktop so that it will be easy to run the workaround again in the future should the need arise. The batch file stops and restarts your antivirus software services. Follow the steps below to download the file:
IE 5.x users, when prompted select
Save this program to disk.
Note: IE 6 users will see a different prompt and should click
Save.
In the Save As window that appears, navigate to your Windows desktop.
Click the Save button.
To run the batch file, double click the Symantec Restart.bat icon on your Windows desktop. A DOS screen briefly appears telling you that the service is starting and stopping. If the error reoccurs, you can run the batch file again.
You may stop and restart the services manually, if you wish. Click here for instructions.
Manually stopping and starting the service
Follow these steps to stop and start the antivirus service manually:
Close down the error message.
Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.
On the list of services, scroll down to Symantec AntiVirus Client.
Right-click on that service and choose St op.
You will see a screen telling you that "Windows is attempting to stop the following service on Local Computer..."
Once that process finishes, right-click the service again and choose Start.
You will see a screen telling you that "Windows is attempting to start the following service on Local Computer..."
Once that process finishes, try running the scan again. If you are still getting errors, reboot the machine, and then try again.
