Most users experiencing problems with the Sasser Worm need the worm removed, security patches installed, and the SMS Advanced Client installed.  These packages will make those installations with a minimum of user attention. Follow the instructions below if you cannot maintain a consistent high speed network connection (your machine disconnects) or if you are using a slow connection e.g. RAS or IPASS. If you do not have a CD you can order one.

If your machine will maintain a consistent high speed network connection (LAN (office), WAN or VPN) then the best practice is to install from the P: drive. See the instructions 19056 — Install SMS, security patches and Sasser worm fix manually from the P: Drive.

CD - Manual Install of Sasser Worm fix, Security Patches and SMS Advanced Client

1. Save and close all open programs and files. This install will force a reboot when complete. There will be no warning or opportunity to close files before the reboot. The install will wait at least twice for a response from you so you can't leave and expect it to be done when you return.

2. Insert the CD into your CD drive.

3. The install package should start automatically as soon as your machine begins reading the CD.

4. If the install does not begin within one minute start the install manually:

1. Open My Computer.

2. Select your CD drive.

3. Find the file install.vbs

4. Double-click on the file install.vbs

5. When the install window opens click OK to begin the install.
   You may have to answer some prompts manually but please wait about 30 seconds before manually answering a prompt to see if the prompt will be answered automatically.

6. The install of the SMS client will take approximately 6 minutes. The time remaining on the status bar will increase and decrease during the install process.

7. After the SMS client is installed an Anti-Virus window will open to scan your machine for the Sasser worm.

8. Select OK for windows that open during the scanning / repair process.

9. After the Anti-Virus process is complete the security patches will install.

10. After the security patches have been installed the machine will shut-down then reboot.

11. Do not interrupt the reboot!. The installation process finishes after the reboot. The machine is not fully patched until then.

12. When the log-on screen reappears log on normally. The installation process will complete automatically and will not interfere with you beginning work.

If you need a CD with the patch and SMS client install, please follow the instructions below. Be sure to include your shipping address. The CD containing the patch, the SMS client and installation instructions will be mailed to you via Federal Express.

1. Go to http://northstar.peoplesoft.com

2. Click on Log Service Ticket

3. Specify your contact preference and information

4. Click on the Next button

5. Click on the Software Applications radio button

6. Click on the Next button

7. Select AntiVirus for the "What application are you using?" field

8. Select I need to report a possible virus infection for the "What problem are you experiencing?" field

9. Select your machine's OS for the "What operating system are you using?" field

10. Select how you are connecting to the network in the "How are you connecting?"

11. Enter Virus - CD REQUEST in the "Subject" field

12. Enter your shipping address (no PO Box addresses please) in the "Description" field

13. Click on the Finish button
