The Media Bar incorporates Windows Media Player into the browser.  It opens in the left hand panel much the same way "Favorites" "Search" and "History" do.  The first time you click on a media file link after installing Internet Explorer 6 you will get a prompt asking whether to open the file in the Media bar. Select the image icon to see a screenshot of the message.  Because of the limited space in the panel the image will be smaller than if you use the external media player. If you select "Yes" to open the selection in the Media Bar you should uncheck the box for "Remember my preference" because the window is very small and not usually what you will want for on-line training, web casts, on-line meetings etc.

To change Media bar settings:

1. In Internet Explorer, click Media on the toolbar to open the Media bar.
2. Near the bottom of the Media bar click Media Options.
3. Point to Settings, and then click the settings you want to turn on or off.
   A check mark next to a setting indicates that the setting is turned on.
4. Check Play web media in the bar if you want video and audio links to open in the Media Bar instead of the default media player. Uncheck Play web media in the bar if you want audio and video to open in the default media player.
5. Check Ask for preferred types if you want to choose a different preference for each type of audio or video file or to restore the prompt that asks whether you want to open in the browser.  When you open a file in the Media bar, the file type for the file is saved. If the Remember my preference check box is selected, when you open a file with that file type again, it will be opened in the Media bar. Uncheck Ask for preferred types if you want all audio and video files to open in your default media player regardless of type.
6. Check Reset perferred types to clear your previous choices and restore the prompt that asks whether you want to open in the browser.  When you choose " Remember my preference" files of that particular type will open in the browser if you selected "yes" or your default media player if you selected "no" to the question whether to open in the browser.
7. If the file is opening in the Media Player and you want to see a slightly larger image click on the "undock" button in the upper right corner of the Media Player controls.

 

Online Media content

If your computer is connected to the Internet, when you view the Media Bar, you may automatically see online media content. Viewing online media content causes an automatic connection to the following Microsoft Web site: http://windowsmedia.com/mediabar/default.asp.

If you want change whether you see Online media content in the Media bar change the setting in Internet Options:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. From the menu bar select Tools then choose Internet Options ...
3. When the Internet Options  window opens select the Advanced Tab.
4. Scroll down to the Multimedia section and change Don't Display Online Media Content in the Media Bar. This setting specifies whether you want to display the online Media bar content from the following Microsoft Web site: http://windowsmedia.com/mediabar/default.asp. If you click to clear this check box, Internet Explorer displays the offline Media bar content from the Browselc.dll file (res://Browselc.dll/Mboffline.htm).
