System freezes when using Internet Explorer

If you have an excessive number of temporary internet files or insufficient space on your hard drive your operating system may freeze up when you use Microsoft Internet Explorer. To resolve the problem take these steps:

To resolve the problem take these steps::

  1. Delete all temporary internet files. The usual way to delete the temporary internet files is within IE. In this case you will have to delete them manually.

    • For Windows NT4 Open Windows NT Explorer and navigate to c:\winnt\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 . Click once in the right hand panel where the files are listed. Press and hold the {Ctrl} key then press the {a} key. Release both keys. All the files in the folder should be highlighted. Press the {Delete} key and confirm that you wish to delete all files.

    • For Windows 2000 Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\ your username\Settings\Temporary Internet Files. Press and hold the {Ctrl} key then press the {a} key. Release both keys. All the files in the folder should be highlighted. Press the {Delete} key and confirm that you wish to delete all files.

  2. Use Add/Remove programs to remove "Comet Cursor". See Eureka! document 69004 — How to uninstall and install software.

  3. Search your computer for other unnecessary files to delete. See Eureka! document 39008 — How to free up some hard disk space.

  4. Optimizing the hard disk may help detect and correct corrupt file problems, certain disk errors, and some memory problems. For more information on optimizing the hard disk performance please see Eureka! document 10031 — How to defragment your drive.

  5. Running the Scan Disk utility can often repair minor hard disk problems. For more information on checking your hard disk for errors please see the document 69029 — How to check your hard disk for bad sectors and other errors.
