Software Update Service (SUS) is no longer a mandatory part of the PeopleSoft environment for Microsoft security patches and operating system updates. However, the function will still appear on your machine, and you have the ability to enable or disable it through the Control Panel.

Systems Management Server (SMS) is the standard software delivery for PeopleSoft, replacing SUS. Today, when software, updates, or patches are delivered to your machine, you will see one of the icons below. The first two icons are PeopleSoft-managed delivery methods, while the third (Automatic Updates) is a Microsoft-based update service. (The service is not used because Microsoft may deliver updates that are not reviewed, validated, or required within the PeopleSoft environment. All required patches are delivered through the first two delivery options.)

Why it's there:	This is part of the SMS client on your machine. Security patches and other critical updates are delivered to you through this PeopleSoft-managed process.	A new advertised program is available for you. This is either due to a delivery by Information Technology, or you requested a program to be delivered to your machine.	This is a function of the Windows 2000 operating system (beginning with Service Pack 2). This is not enabled on PeopleSoft machines by default.
Will updates force a reboot?	Yes, if the patch requires it. (Many security updates require a reboot.)	Yes, if the installed program requires it. (Most installations are designed to not force a reboot, however.)	Possibly, once installed — depending on the type of update delivered.
Will I see a reboot warning?	Possibly. If a reboot is needed for a mandatory patch, you will be prompted to reboot within the next 60 minutes. For critical updates, a reboot may be forced immediately after the install completes.	Generally, you will receive a prompt alerting you that a reboot is required. Some prompts may allow you to cancel the reboot, allowing you to reboot or shutdown at your convenience.	Yes.
Who manages and supports these updates?	PeopleSoft's SMS team (working with Security Operations) within Information Technology. Support is available though NorthStar. There is no internal support for these updates.
