Some Microsoft Office applications let you assign passwords to documents as a way to prevent unauthorized users from opening or editing them.

Do not use a database password if you will be replicating a database. Replicated databases can't be synchronized if database passwords are set.

You will not be able to set a database password if user-level security has been defined, and you don't have Administer permission for the database.

Apply a password

To set a password on an Access database, follow these steps:

1. Close the current database and make a copy.

2. From the File menu, select Open Database.

3. Click in the box next to Exclusi ve (under the Advanced... button) so that a checkmark appears.

4. Open the database.

5. From the Tools menu, choose Securi ty.

6. Chose Set Database Password ...

7. Type your password in the Password : box. Passwords are case-sensitive.

8. In the Verify : box, re-enter your password.

9. Click on the OK button.

The password is now set. The next time you or any other user opens the database, a dialog box will be displayed that requests the password.

 

Note: Once a password is assigned, it is required to to open the database. If the password is lost or forgotten, there is no way to open the database.

Remove a password

To Remove a database password:

1. From the File menu, select Open Database.

2. Click in the box next to Exclusi ve (under the Advanced... button) so that a checkmark appears.

3. Choose the database you wish to open.

4. Type in the database's password when prompted.

5. With the database open, from the Tools menu, choose Securi ty.

6. Select Unset Database Password ... You will again be prompted to enter in the password for this database.

7. Enter in the database's password, then click on the OK button.

 

This will remove the password protection from the open database.
