How to Promote/Demote an Employee
Your first step in the promotion or demotion process is to review the Compensation Guidelines information posted in the Manager Resources section of the Human Resources site on Planet PeopleSoft. You can access the Manager Resources site using the link available on the Manager Dashboard on Planet PeopleSoft. All promotions and demotions should be discussed with your HR Business Partner and your Compensation Analyst before completing the transaction through Manager Self-Service. No changes will be made in HRDB until all approvals have been received.
To promote an employee follow the steps below. To demote an employee, see the Demote an Employee section below.
To Promote an Employee:
Log into Planet PeopleSoft. For more information, see Eureka! document 15270 — How to log in to Planet PeopleSoft.
Locate the Planet Navigator on the left hand side of your Planet page
Click on Applications to see a list of available applications. Access to the applications listed are role based. If you do not have access to applications that you need you must submit a NorthStar ticket.
Click on Human Resources Self-Service (HRMS).
Select Self Service > Manager > Task > Promote/Demote Employee.
Indicate the effective date of the change in the Promotions/Demotion Date field, then click Go.
This will bring up a list of employees that report to you. Click on the Name of the employee you are promoting. If you wish to see a list of employees that do not report to you directly, but are part of your reporting chain, click here.
Click on the Name of the employee receiving the promotion.
In the Promotion/Demotion Details section, select the Action of Promotion and then the appropriate Reason code: Development or Inline Promotion.
Enter the new information for Department, Job Code, Location and Supervisor.
Click the Submit button.
You will be presented with a list of individuals that will be notified of this transaction. If the promotion should include a change in salary, click Employee Salary Change (next to the OK button) to initiate this change. Otherwise, click OK to begin the notification process for the change in job code only.
You will be able to check the status of a promotion by going to Self Service > Manager > Tasks > Promotion/Demotion Status.
Reminder: All actions will need to be approved by Compensation prior to becoming effective in HRDB.

In the Promotion/Demotion Details section, select the Action of Demotion and then the appropriate Reason code: Development, Performance or Inline Voluntary Election.
Enter the new information for Department, Job Code, Location and Supervisor.
Click the Submit button.
You will be presented with a list of individuals that will be notified of this transaction. If the demotion should include a change in salary, click Employee Salary Change (next to the OK button) to initiate this change. Otherwise, click OK to begin the notification process for the change in job code only.
You will be able to check the status of a demotion by going to Self Service > Manager > Tasks > Promotion/Demotion Status.

To see a list of employees that do not report to you directly, but are part of your reporting chain:
Click on the Search for an employee in your organization link.
Choose either Last Name or Employee ID in the Search by field using the drop down box provided.
Click on the Employee name. This will take you to Promotion Method.
