How to Terminate an Employee

When a termination in expected (voluntary) you should follow these steps as soon as notified so that Human Resources and Payroll can coordinate final obligations, collection of company assets can begin, and documentation regarding the termination can be produced.  

When a termination is of a highly sensitive or immediate nature, contact HR Service Center immediately to assist in the matter. See Eureka! document 18165 — Contacting HR Service Center for more information.

  1. Log onto Planet PeopleSoftFor more information, see Eureka! Document 15270 — How to log on to Planet PeopleSoft.

  2. Locate the Planet Navigator on the left hand side of your Planet page.

  3. Click on Applications to see a list of available applications.  Access to the applications listed are role based.  If you do not have access to applications that you need you must submit a NorthStar ticket. 

  4. Click on Human Resources Self-Servive (HRMS).

  5. Select Self Service > Manager > Task > Terminate Employee.

  6. Indicate the effective date of the change in the Date Change Will Take Effect field, then click Go.

  7. Important note: The date indicated should reflect the day after the last day worked. Managers need to enter the first day the employee is not employed at PeopleSoft (the first day that the former employee is off the payroll and network access is inactive).

  8. Select the Name of the employee you wish to terminate. You will be taken to the Terminate Employee screen.

  9. Use the drop down box to complete the Reason for Termination field.

  10. For termination of managers, you should complete the Replacing Manager ID field.  You can enter the ID number or use the search button to look it up.

  11. The Employee Suitable for Rehire check box is checked by default.  If you wish to indicate that the employee is not suitable for rehire, be sure to uncheck this box.

  12. Click on the Submit button.

  13. On the Submit Confirmation page, click OK.
