International user preferences can be set so that the regional settings are correct for an international locations as well as being able to spell check in a language other than English. Some of the preferences require a new dictionary for that language to be loaded. For information on installing additional language directories in Lotus Notes, see Eureka! document 16220 — How to change the language for spell checking in Lotus Notes.

To set International user preferences:
Note: Changing the regional or other settings options will not automatically change the language that Lotus Notes functions in. See your local Field Operations group for additional assistance.

1. Select F ile from the menu bar.
   
   
2. Select Pre ferences from the drop down list and select U ser Preferences... from the next drop down list.
   
   
3. Click the International tab on the left side of the window.
   
   
4. General Settings section:
   
   
   • R egional settings: Click the down arrow and select the appropriate region.
     
     Note: When the regional settings are changed, all of the other options will automatically be changed to that selection. The additional options can be manually changed to another region. See step 5 below for additional information on overriding the settings.
     
     
5. Override Settings section:
   Click the C hange button for any of the options to select an alternate language.
   
   
   • Content language: This allows you to take advantage of other languages.
   • Sorting: Allows you to sort in a different language.
   • Spelling dictionary: To spell check in a different language, the dictionary files for that language need to be downloaded.

   • Alternate name language: Allows for an alternate language.
   • Import/Export characters: When you import or export, you can specify the character translation file Lotus Notes uses to translate characters, such as international currency symbols.
     
     
6. The following options do not need special assistance to set. They will be modified when Lotus Notes is restarted:
   
   
• Unit of measurement:
  • I nches: Click the radio button for measurements to be in inches.
  • Centi meters: Click the radio button for measurements to be in centimeters.
    
    
• W eek starts on: The default start of the week is Monday, but some countries begin the week on a day other than Monday. Notes will use this day to set up your free time schedule.
• Calendar view starts on: Changing the day of the week is useful when your work week begins on a specific day. Notes will use this day to set up your calendar view accordingly.
• S mall calendar starts on: Changing the day of the week modifies the day of the week that the small calendar begins on in the calendar.
  
  
7. Click OK.

A message may appear that says "Some preferences may not take effect until the next time the program is started." Click OK and exit Lotus Notes. When Notes is re-opened, the settings will be changed to the region selected.
