Access levels assigned to users in the access control list (ACL) of a Lotus Notes database control which tasks users can perform in the database. Depending on an access level given, a user may have more global or restricted access to a database. If a user is not included in one of the groups in an ACL or listed individually, they will not be able to access a database unless it is open to all users.

The following chart lists the access levels that can be assigned along with what a user with that level is able to do in a database:
Note: Delete rights must be assigned for any level. These rights are not automatically given for any level.

Manager	Modify the ACL Perform all tasks allowed by lower access lev	Two individuals should be designated as the database manager. These individuals will be given the Role of [dbmanager4db]. The [dbmanager4db] role cannot be assigned to a group list.
Designer	Modify database design Create full-text search index Perform all tasks allowed by lower access level	Users responsible for the database design and enhancements.
Editor	Create documents Edit all documents including those created by others Read all documents	Users who are allowed to create and edit documents in the database.
Author	Create documents (must be assigned) Edit document that they have created Read all documents	Users that need to be able to add documents to the database.
Reader	Read documents	Users who only need to read documents in the database but not add or edit documents.
Depositor	Create documents	Users who only need to contribute documents to the database. They cannot read or edit any documents.
