When you receive new mail in Lotus Notes, the default is set to audibly notify you with a new mail tone.  You may also set a visual notification for new mail.  The visual notification is convenient if you are working in applications other than Lotus Notes because a pop up window notifying you of new mail will appear.  For the visual notification to work while you are working in a different application, you must have Lotus Notes open.

To set the visual new mail notification in Lotus Notes:

1. Select File from the menu bar.

2. Select Preferences from the drop down menu and select User Preferences... from the next drop down menu.

3. Click Mail and News on the left hand side of the User Preferences window.

4. Under Receiving, click the box next to Visible notification so that a check mark appears in the box.

5. You may leave the options set so that you receive new mail notification both visibly and audibly.  However, if you wish to only receive visible notification and no longer receive audible notification, deselect the Audible notification option by clicking the box next to it so a check mark no longer appears.

6. Once your new mail preferences have been selected, click OK.

For the changes to take effect, you need to close out of your mail file and re-open it.
