How to wrap text in a cell in Microsoft Excel

Document number: 16059

If you have a lot of information to enter into a cell in Microsoft Excel but want to keep that cell or the whole cell column width to a certain size, format the cell(s) so that the text will wrap. This will keep the text from appearing to go into the next cell or column. Follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the cell or column by clicking on it.

  2. Select F ormat from the menu bar and select C ells... from the drop down menu.

  3. Click the Alignment tab.

  4. In the Text alignment section, click the down arrow in the Vertical: field and select Top.

  5. In the Text control section, click the box next to Wrap text so that a check mark appears in the box.

  6. Click OK.

The cell or column that you selected will now have the wrap text format.

Note: If you have changed the format so the text wraps, you may need to increase the width of the row that the text appears in. Otherwise, the text will appear to be "cut off."  Once you extend the width of the row, you should see all of the text.
