Getting started in Process Modeler

Document number: 15335

Note: This document assumes you are not already working with another file, but that you wish to start a brand new process model. You should plan your diagram before actually building it.

To start your model, follow the steps below. The steps below refer to parts of the Process Modeler screen. To see a screenshot, click here.

  1. Close any open diagrams. Save if you need to save the work you just did.

  2. Click on File and then on New... A new File folder will appear in the Model View section on the left side of your screen.

  3. Double-click on the Process Modeler folder in the Model View.

  4. In the Select Subject for Process Modeler dialog box that appears, ensure that the radio button for Task is selected. Then type in a name for this task in the field provided and click Select. Your new workspace will appear.

  5. Create your " swim lanes". You must have at least one swim lane in your model so that you may attach your objects, such as tasks, to it.
    • A swim lane is a way to organize who performs a set of tasks.
      • Example: You would put an organization into a swim lane if any or all of them can complete a particular set of tasks or make certain decisions. You could put people in the same "role" in a single swim lane as well.
    • To add a swim lane, follow these steps:
      1. Click once on the swim lane icon on the Object Creation Toolbar.
      2. When you move your cursor onto the workspace, the cursor will become a rectangle.
      3. Click on the Process Modeler workspace to add a swim lane.
      4. Generally, you want to choose an Organization or a Role for the swim lane.
      5. Give the swim lane a name in the blank field.
      6. Click OK.

  6. Create at least one object (a task or a decision object) in one of your swim lanes.
  7. Next, save your file. Process Modeler will not save a file, nor will it prompt you to save your file, unless the file is named. So it is possible to work and add objects to a file and lose all your work.
    • Click on File, then Save as, and then File... and type in a name for the file.
    • Once the file is named it will automatically save any changes when you exit the program.

You may add your tasks and other objects as needed.
