For versions prior to Symantec AntiVirus version 8.1.1 (see Eureka! document 15380 — How to find out which version of AntiVirus is installed on your machine) an AntiVirus scan is scheduled to run on a regular basis via the scheduled PeopleScan (see Eureka! document 15038 — AntiVirus - PeopleScan.)

For Symantec AntiVirus version 8.1.1, you are protected automatically via File System Realtime Protection; new files added to your machine are also scanned. A weekly scan is not necessary.

You can always run a manual scan in either version:

To run a manual scan, follow these steps:

1. Click on the Start menu.

2. Click on Programs.

3. Click on Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (or Symantec Client Security).

4. Click on Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (or Symantec AntiVirus Client).

5. Click on the Scan menu.

6. Click on Scan Computer.

7. Choose a drive, directory, or file(s) to scan. Click on a checkbox next to a drive to choose to scan the entire drive. Most of the time, you will want to scan the C: drive.
   • When you click on the box, a plus sign and a checkmark both appear to indicate that the contents of the entire drive has been chosen.
   • To choose just certain directories on the drive, click on the plus sign (+) next to the drive to open the directory structure. Then click in the box next the specific directories you want to scan.

   • For a more thorough explanation of the symbols inside the checkboxes, see the Help file in Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition and look for "Selecting drives, folders, and files."

8. To run a thorough scan (meaning, all the files types on the computer) or drive, make sure the make sure all file extension types are chosen:
• On the Scan Computer screen (the screen where you chose the drives to scan), click on the Options... button.
• In the File Types section of the screen that appears, click on the radio button next to All types.

  • If you want to check just certain extensions, you may click on the radio button next to either of the Selected buttons and choose to scan only certain file extensions or certain types of files. After you click the radio button next to your choice, click on the button that becomes active to view the files that will be scanned.

9. Click S can. The Scan Computer screen appears and the program scans the drives, directories, or files you selected.

10. As the scan is running, a small icon of a hard drive with the drive spinning appears. When it is complete, the word "Completed" appears above the name of the file and you will no longer see the spinning disk on the icon.

11. When the scan is complete, close the scanning screen by clicking the " x" at the top right-hand corner of the screen.

 

Your selected drive, directory, or file(s) is scanned.
