Using Norton AntiVirus to check compressed files

Document number: 15037

Norton AntiVirus software can scan and detect infected files in a compressed file, such as a *.zip file. However, Norton AntiVirus cannot actually repair an infected file while it is compressed. To repair file(s) in a compressed file (such as a *.zip file), you must expand those file(s) and repair them individually.

Norton AntiVirus' Help file recommends the following:

  1. Launch Norton AntiVirus software by clicking on the Start menu, then on Programs, then on Norton AntiVirus, and select Norton AntiVirus.

  2. Disable Auto-Protect by clicking on the Disa ble button to the right of the Auto-Protect status field.

  3. Expand the files of an infected compressed file into a temporary directory on your machine.

  4. Scan and remove any viruses from those expanded files.

  5. Delete the compressed file from your machine and move the cleaned expanded file(s) to an appropriate directory on your machine.

Note: You can leave the compressed file on the machine, but you risk infection if you ever expand the infected file contained in the compressed file, or if you pass the compressed file to an as-yet uninfected machine. Also, if you scan compressed files as part of your regular scanning routine, you will get a warning message about the infection every time a scan is run.

  6. Enable Auto-Protect by clicking on the Ena ble button to the right of the Auto-Protect status field.

The infected file in the compressed file should now be disinfected.
