Package installations are running more than once

Document number: 14113

SMS is designed to deliver an advertised program only once to your machine. SMS is experiencing an issue with installing an advertised program, security patch or other update if you see the package run more than once. (This may appear to be the installation re-running itself multiple times, being stuck in a loop, etc.) If your machine is behaving in this way, follow these steps:

Note: There are a few installations that run more than once under a generic header. These are generally limited to security patch deliveries and virus protection updates. In rare cases, issues requiring regular system monitoring (i.e. a virus outbreak) may result in specific scans being run on a more frequent basis, but you will generally see communications regarding these cases.

  1. Check the version of your SMS client. Older versions of the SMS client may not install programs and updates correctly. To check the version number, see Eureka! document 14112 — How to determine your machine's SMS client version.

  2. Check the version of your Windows 2000 Service Pack. Service Pack 4 — the current Windows 2000 Service Pack — fully utilizes the features and functions of the SMS 2003 Advanced Client. To check what Service Pack is on your machine, see Eureka! document 69035 — How to find out what Windows Service Pack is loaded.

  3. Check your version of Internet Explorer version. If you have Internet Explorer Gold version, you need to upgrade to the current version of Internet Explorer. See Eureka! document 19024 — Internet Explorer Encryption Type, Version and Service Pack Issues for instructions on how to check the version of IE installed on your machine.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, please log a NorthStar ticket or contact Technical Support Operations for assistance.
