Sametime Connect instant messaging etiquette
As with any instant messaging software, it is best to use good judgement and professionalism when using the application. The following are suggestions for keeping the instant messaging within Sametime Connect professional:
Beginning an instant messaging session
Although you have free time to begin an instant messaging session, remember that the person or people you want to be chatting with may not. Remember to ask them if they have time right now to IM before just plunging into the discussion.
Ending an instant messaging session
Once an instant messaging session has begun, it's sometimes difficult to end it. Once all information has been discussed, let those in the IM session know that you are done and that you are signing off the session.
Don't use all CAPS to communicate
Using all CAPS is considered yelling so it's best to use proper capitalization when typing. If a point needs to be emphasized, then using caps for emphasis is acceptable.
Watch the language used
Remember to keep the language used in an instant messaging session professional. The IM window often automatically pops up on your desktop so you want to maintain the professionalism as this is a business environment.
Change status when not available
If you are not available to participate in an instant messaging session for any reason, be sure to change your online status to
I Am Away or
Do Not Disturb Me. For information on how to change your online status, see Eureka! document
