Important files to back up using Connected software
The following are files you may want to back up for retrieval after a computer rebuild or replacement. If you want to back them up you should make sure that they are selected for backup in Connected software. Some of them are backed up be default, but you should check to see if the backup is working correctly. For information on how to select files for backup see Eureka! document 11224 — How to select files for backup.
NOTE: Connected policy stipulates that if you do not back up to Connected for a 60 days, that account is considered no longer in use and will be deactivated.
Your personal Notes dictionary:
C:\Apps\Notes\Data\User.dic
Note: If you retrieve files from Connected, the restored version can have a different name to avoid overwriting the copy already on disk. Notes will not recognize it because of that different name. After retrieving the file above, follow these steps:
Your Word "custom" (
i.e., personal) dictionary:
Select C:\Documents and Settings\ URUSERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\custom.dic
NOTE: to see the Application Data folder, you may have to set up your Folder settings so that "hidden" folders and files can be seen - see Eureka! document 69051 — How to Use Windows Explorer and My Computer - Hidden files.
If you restore using Connected, the restored version can have a different name. This is to avoid overwriting the copy already on disk. Close Word, delete Custom.dic and rename Custom Restore 1.dic to Custom.dic. If you are moving from Windows NT 4 to Windows 2000 you might prefer to open Custom Restore 1.dic and Custom.dic each in different Notepad windows and copy the contents from Custom Restore 1.dic to Custom.dic to avoid potential version conflicts.
C:\apps\notes\data\mail\a_ URUSER.nsf (where URUSER is your Lotus Notes user name up to 6 characters)
or
C:\apps\notes\data\archive\a_ URUSER.nsf (where URUSER is your Lotus Notes user name up to 6 characters)For example, user jdax would have an archive named a_jdax.nsf that could be located in either of the locations above.
Your personal Lotus Notes databases (but not
URUSERID.nsf, which is a replica of the one on the server). Lotus Notes database filenames must end with an ".nsf" extension.
If you created any Lotus Notes SmartIcons and macros, they're the
.BMP and
.MAC files in
C:\Apps\Notes\data\w32
Back up only the ones created after your system's build date. The others were created by the Lotus Notes installation process.
By default your data files, documents like PowerPoint presentations, graphics you've created, etc., will be backed up only if they are stored under C:\User (including its subfolders). Files should be removed from the desktop and stored under C:\User. If you have a "My Documents" folder on the desktop, its contents should be moved to C:\User or one of its subfolders.
Important! Storage and backup resources are costly. You should be backing up
only data used for business purposes.
Your Windows desktop (back up the entire folder):
C:\Documents and Settings\ URUSERID\Desktop (where URUSERID is your network ID)
Your personal start menu entries including your startup application set (include subfolders!):
C:\Documents and Settings\ URUSERID\Start Menu (where URUSERID is your network ID)
Your scheduled tasks if you use them (Windows 2000 only):
C:\WINNT\Tasks
Your (Microsoft Word)
Autotext entries in are in your Normal.dot file. There may be several copies on your system.
C:\Apps\Office2000\Templates\PeopleSoft Templates\Normal.dot
Your customized Excel toolbars:
Select all .XLB files in C:\Documents and Settings\ URUSERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel (where URUSERID is your network ID)
NOTE: to see the Application Data folder, you may have to set up your Folder settings so that "hidden" folders and files can be seen - see Eureka! document 69051 — How to Use Windows Explorer and My Computer - Hidden files.
Your CD player database (Windows 2000 only):
C:\Documents and Settings\ URUSERID\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Player
NOTE: to see the Application Data folder, you may have to set up your Folder settings so that "hidden" folders and files can be seen - see Eureka! document 69051 — How to Use Windows Explorer and My Computer - Hidden files.
Take advantage of the above checklist to make sure that all important files are selected for backup. For information on how to select files for backup, see Eureka! document 11224 — How to select files for backup.
