How to change the Lotus Notes password

Document number: 10070

It is recommended that the Lotus Notes password be changed immediately from the default.

To change the Lotus Notes password:

  1. Click File from menu bar.

  2. Select Tools from the drop down list and select User ID... from the next drop down list.

  3. Type the current password and click OK.

  4. Click the Set Password... button in the User ID password settings section of the Basics tab.

  5. Type the current password again and click OK.

  6. Type the new password and click OK.

Note: The Lotus Notes password must be at least 8 characters and is case sensitive.

  7. Type the new password again for verification and click OK.

  8. Click OK to close the User ID... window.

The Lotus Notes password has now been changed and should be used the next time Notes is launched.

Because a Notes ID is local to each machine, if Notes is used on multiple machines, the password must be changed on each machine or the ID copied to the other machines.

Because your Lotus Notes password is stored with your ID file locally on your machine, the password cannot be reset or recovered if it is forgotten. A NorthStar ticket must be opened requesting that the original ID file with the default password is sent. For additional information, click here.

If you forget your Lotus Notes password, it cannot be reset or recovered because the password is stored in the ID file which is local on your machine. The original ID file will need to be requested with the default password so that it can be reinstalled on the machine.

To request the original ID file with the default password:

  1. Open NorthStar (http://northstar.peoplesoft.com).

  2. Click the Log Service Ticket link in the Submit Tickets section in the left hand navigation panel.

  3. Enter your contact information and click Next.

  4. Click the radio button next to Lotus Notes and click the Next button.

  5. What type of problem are you having?: Click the down arrow and select I need help with my User ID or password.

  6. Subject: Type "I forgot my Lotus Notes password and need the original ID file."

  7. Description: Enter the name of the person the Notes ID should be sent to so that it can be copied to your machine.

  8. Click the Finish button.

The original ID file with the default password will be sent to the person you specified in the ticket. When they receive the ID file, it should be copied to a floppy disk and copied to your c:\apps\notes\data directory. The current ID file should be overwritten. After the original ID file is copied to your machine, you will be able to open Lotus Notes with the original default password. Follow the instructions at the beginning of this document to change the password to something unique.
