As Lotus Notes databases are created, a database manager or managers must be designated. The database manager works with a Lotus Notes developer and a Lotus Notes administrator in the development and deployment of the database. The database manager is the primary contact for users when issues occur in a database.

The following lists many of the responsibilities of the database manager:

• Determines who should have access to the database and at what level. The access control list (ACL) should in most cases contain groups from the PeopleSoft Directory. On occasion, individuals may be listed.

• Creates and maintains the content in the About This Database and Using This Database documents for the database.

• Troubleshoots issues when users are having problems with the database.
  The Lotus Notes Help database can assist with troubleshooting and answer some questions. Open the Notes Help database by clicking this link -> Lotus Notes Help database.

• Answers user questions and attends to issues regarding the database.

• Trains users to use the database. Step by step instructions should also be included in the Using this database document.

• Gives another individual manager access and informs them of the responsibilities of the database manager should the current manger transfer a different department or leave the company.

• Trains another user as a backup contact should the database manager be unavailable.

• Contacts the Messaging and Groupware Services if a database is no longer needed so that it can be deleted from the servers as they can take up alot of disk space.
